your too close for comfort

morning readers. my last post was a bit depressing, but hey we all have our ups and downs right? be at ease, this one is a lot more philosophical, much less emotional. todays topic: christmas, and the horribly mangled phrase "its the thought that counts".

alright, lets do christmas first. itll make a good lead up to the bulk of what i want to discuss, which is the aforementioned popular saying.

christmas. christmas christmas christmas. hands up those of you who love this time of the year! the lights, the gifts, the trees, the love, all of it. i dont know about the rest of you, but i find that the festive season passes so quickly. too quickly.

no, its not because of how "good times fly by". nope, ive figured it out(well, on MY end anyway. read on and see if you agree with me me duckies) and its actually due to how this season is a time for RELAXING.

lemme explain using some examples.

if your a student, this time will be cherished because you will actually be free from school. without having to spend near 7 or 9 hours in our fine(?) learning institutions, you have the luxury of doing whatever you want, whenever you want. whether this involves catching a movie with friends, clubbing or just having lunch with em notice one thing!

your relaxing. in school, you tend to be more wound up, tense like a spring. you live life based on assignments, grades and attendance in lessons. in short, you have little or no liberty- in effect a mouse in a maze designed by a higher power to observe your powers of reasoning and how fast you learn.

however, you, as a student, have much less leeway and motivation than the proverbial mouse. you must do all these things over and over again, without having the time to pause or slow down to rest lest you be left behind in the rat race(pun intended). in addition, the lack of any proper "cheese in the middle of the maze" just rubs in the fact that school is, in itself, a winding, inescapable prison during your stay.

thus, with so much on your mind, its no wonder unwinding seems like a luxury during the holidays! after an immensely cumbersome period of time, we all appreciate chilling out and wallowing in the very FACT that we have no obligations to anyone.

inevitably though, we all must re enter the drudgery of work life. therefore, as the time for frolic comes to a close, we reflect on how we will no longer be able to truly "relax" anymore, and must be chained to the task of fulfilling the wishes of others once more.

time flies during this holiday period because when the celebrations are done and finished, we have none to do what we really want- that is to unwind.

phew that was a mouthful. hope your all ready for another!

"its the thought that counts". its something we hear all the time. to make this interesting and eye-catching, ill first examine when we can expect to get this, especially under which context and circumstances. after, ill show you the way singaporeans have shamefully butchered it, the misconceptions associated with this saying and how it was always intended to be used.

first, when someone says to you "its the thought that counts", your usually on the receiving end of an inexpensive(sometimes not very tastefully bought) gift or your in the process of getting one for a friend.

its supposed to comfort you one way or another. it either assures you that hey at least the person gave you enough thought and got you this present, however off it is. or you, in the act of spending money on a present, are displaying your considerations of your pal.

alright, the thing is, singaporeans have bastardised this phrase to no small extent. i hate to sound cliche, but the kiasu nature of citizens of this fine country have prevailed over intelligence and sensitivity once more. they have, to no end, used this phrase to escape guilt and dodge responsibility.

its simple, you see when you say "its the thought that counts", the concept involves you putting great thought and effort into getting the gift. it doesnt matter if it doesnt live up to the expectations of whoevers getting the present. the phrase implies that you really really really sat down to THINK about what to get your friend, after examining his/her preferences. you KNOW the person, thus you look for ways to show that you understand his/her personality and wants.

THATS what the phrase means! for you to look inside yourself and the buddy your buying a gift for! this present will act as a message between the both of you, a way to display that you to have a connection, a friendship which nothing other than the most careful brainstorming to decide what to buy for him/her can do it justice! every friendship is different and beautiful, thus every one deserves a little soul searching to figure out the perfect present for em.

right, there we go. i really pray that you, my readers, get the gist of what this whole post is about. its something extremely important, vital beyond measure.

getting me a nice, expensive present.

hahahaha nonono im kidding. if you want to get gifts for friends you love, start your searching from the heart... common sense, no?

in conclusion, happy holidays everybody! while i may be stuck in the office this fine friday morning, ill see you soon enough me lovelies. take care, and God be with you!

p.s. got the two paramore albums!!! WOOHOO!!!

Paramore's Brighter

And if you ran away
I'd still wave goodbye
Watching you shine bright

Now I think we're taking this too far
Don't you know that it's not this hard
Well it's not this hard
But if you take what's yours then I'll take mine
Must we go there
Please not this time, no not this time

I'd wave goodbye
Watching you shine bright
I'll wave goodbye tonight
