evening me lovelies. its been such a long time since i blogged, last LAST monday if im not wrong. well, you can hardly blame me can ye? what with me having to go through so much this week(mounting, setting sail in the south china sea) its actually a small miracle i could think this up. luckily my imagination runs wild whenever im bored/stoning.
mmm, today will be a quick little story i wrote up while resting in bed(in camp, at home and on the ship.). i drew heavy inspiration from the graphic novel john constantine hellblazer. its pretty cool and the world woven in its tales really draws one into the story. thus i thought id pay a little homage to it and inject a little darkness and horror into my newest post. so sit back and enjoy...
Introducing Adam Occult
by Lau Han-Loong
the heartlands at night. stars are a scarcity here, the dirty clouds and pollution from the day's commune blotting out what otherwise would be a beauteous sight. the street lamps glow a dull orange, and seem to dim even more as twilight creeps closer and closer. darkness presses on the flats, smothering the homes of hundreds under a growing black shroud.
as the weary retire to their homes, the cars and human traffic dwindle to nothing but the rare homeless oddity and lonely vehicle trudging back to a quiet, cold parking spot. soon, the streets and pathways frequented so often during the day quieten to dead silence. the air turns stagnant, as if moved into rigidity by the obtrusiveness pause in motion. it is in such a gloomy place that our story takes off.
Adam Occult stands below a tree, facing the particularly undesirable void deck of a particularly undesirable flat. dirty white light spills from fluorescents browned by trapped dead insects, soil and god knows what else onto the grass near his feet. the tables and chairs made of stone gleam with muck, empty drink cans and wrappers lying around them. the whole place reeked of stale urine and rotting meat.
Adam breathes deep, and steps out from under the shadows of the tree. theres is nothing immediate about his appearance. his hair wavy and neat, the fringe stopping short above his right eyebrow and clearly revealing the left part of his forehead. a nose sloping slightly upwards sharpens to an abrupt end, above a mouth which suggested a preference to frown. his angular head sits upon a body which looks like it belongs to a swimmer or runner: lean yet muscular.
wearing a dark brown sweater with his hands tucked into the pockets at the front, black pants held slightly above the waste by a dark belt adorned with a gleaming silver buckle, Adam smiles a cynical smile. pulling a blood red pack of cigarettes from a pocket, he removes a cigarette and lights up with a small lighter in his other hand. blowing out a cloud of smoke, he continues towards the void deck.
stepping into the elevator, Adam wonders at its disrepair. can this shitty piece of metal really get me up there in one piece he ponders, as he presses button for the thirteenth floor. as the lift climbed impossibly slow up the building, Adam pulls hard on the cigarette and thinks back to the call which dragged him out to this godforsaken part of town. a ring at eleven thirty at night just as he started on dinner, a familiar voice frantically pleading him to get over here immediately, seance gone wrong, something getting loose, screaming in the background and click.
"fuckin amateurs." he mutters to himself as the lift paused at last and the doors opened. walking towards the other end of the corridor, he notices terrified faces which quickly withdraw behind ever so slightly opened doors. at least theyve got the sense to stay in their homes instead of nosing around he thought... or maybe it was just the blood covered gibbering priest outside flat number 8 which keeps them from coming out.
"hi julian. how you doing?"
"A-A-Adam! thank god youve come! theres.. some.. i mean... there was-"
"julian. your stuttering. tell me what happened here. make it quick. and if you start that annoying crap again so help me ill leave and get back to my dinner."
"okok! alright. ok. Adam youve gotta understand... i mean normally id never do this kinda thing but.. this girl was really desperate she needed advice and... wait! WAIT! COME BACK! ok ok im sorry im sorry. this girl came to me a few days ago. she was in a bad state, Adam, crying and stuff. she was so young, just fifteen years old! she said she needed help, that she tried everything else and nothing worked."
"so pass her some of the cash from the donation box and send her on her way julian, what the hell."
"Adam im a man of god! i cant just turn away someone in need! so she... she wanted me to ask someone for help Adam. but not just anyone... she needed to know things which only something... outside could help. something unnatural. i asked her why but she refused to tell me, only that it shamed her and her family would make her an outcast if it were to leak out. at first i said no but Adam... she wouldnt give up. she refused to leave the church and i couldnt call the police on her! so after a while i relented. i thought i knew enough to... make everything go to plan."
"oh fuck no julian..."
"i did everything right Adam, i know it! it would be a simple Calling. id be in a circle, she would be in another. the... the spirit, would be held by two different binding words. one for me one for her. and chained to obey or risk burning. the girl would ask the questions and after it was all done i would send it off and she would know what to do and there would be no harm done i-"
"you stupid PRICK. i TOLD you this sort of thing isnt something you should fuck around with unless you were absolutely damn certain you knew what you were doing! your a friggin PRIEST, how on EARTH would you know anything about a proper Calling? you read a few books and investigate what the mediums get up to and you think your capable of holding a DEMON in a fucking FLAT?!?! ARE YOU INSANE?!?! DONT FLINCH YOU LITTLE MORON, CALL IT BY ITS NAME. A DEMON. YOU SUMMONED A DEMON IN A HDB FLAT. IM SURPRISED IT HASNT FUCKIN EATEN EVERYONE ON THIS FLOOR YET!!!"
"wait no Adam, i placed Flavian's Seal on the door of the room, its trapped there! after... after things went wrong i managed to leave the circle while it was... was... hurting the girl... and completed the seal. please Adam, dont-"
Adam left him floundering for the right words as he kicked open the flat and strode into the blackness which swallowed him as he went forward. he lighted up another fag and tried to cool down as he made for the room with the seal crudely hacked into its doors woodwork. idiot got in over his head and when things got out of hand he left a girl... a fucking FIFTEEN YEAR OLD girl in a room with a DEMON, he thought. ASS HOLE.
pulling hard on the stick, Adam stopped inches away from the door and for the first time noticed a peculiar sound coming from behind the thin piece of wood separating him and the unholy prick on the other side. he listened carefully, trying to identify it. a mewling of some sort. small and lonely and sad. drawing back from the door, Adam's thoughts raced through his head. what kinda sick trick is this bastard trying to pull...
as he flicked his finished cigarette to the floor, he heard a hissing sound below him. looking down, his eyebrows flicked up into his forehead. the smouldering stub had been put out by something seeping from below the door. it was dark, thick and clung to his leather shoes as he lifted them out of the mess. ok that does it, he thought, its time. pushing the door open, Adam breaks the seal and steps over the threshhold.
Here ends Part 1. tune in next time for part 2!
