eating his lunch and enjoying the light breeze, Enemy smiled a little to himself. the tall grass, comfortable position he was in and the abundance of decent food made this little outing almost a picnic, he decided. the sun hung low in the sky, with sluggish grey clouds blotting out most of its shine and placing a light, grayish sheen on the world. if one included the dull, lulling call of insects around him, the tendency to lay back and go to sleep was almost overpowering.
hold on! wait! what was that! a scrape of boots on sand and gravel! a near inaudible clink of metal on metal! sounds not far from where Enemy sat munching happily away at his chow, sounds which had no place in this jungle! carefully shifting a little to his left, Enemy snuck a peek between a tree and the bush he was snugly behind. almost immediately, he caught sight of three men walking along a path fifty metres away from his spot. they wore helmets and uniforms of camouflage green, in addition to rifles and vests which looked very heavy.
sighing heavily, Enemy put down his lunch.
"back to work then." he muttered with a resigned look on his face.
picking up his rifle, Enemy took aim and fired off five resounding shots.
BANGBANGBANGBANGBANG!
the three immediately dropped to the road in a prone position, their leader shouting instructions to the rest. crawling to the nearest cover they could find, which was in this instance trees similar to the one next to Enemy, they began firing blindly at the grove Enemy was concealed in. with a roll of his eyes, Enemy squeezed off several more rounds.
"there!" one of them shouted.
"i see him!" another yelled.
well, Enemy thought to himself, its about time. his job nearly over, Enemy returned to his fried tomato chicken pasta with much gusto. while the trio carried on with the standard operating procedure when facing off against hostile forces, Enemy carried on with his lunch. he fired aimlessly now and then, just to confirm his presence. but he was in no real hurry.
by the time the three had moved to positions about 20 metres away, a tall, solidly built man strode out from a nearby line of trees. he shouted "enemy firepower too strong!" as loud as he could, and it carried over the peace shattering gunshots which now permeated the once tranquil place.
without further ado, Enemy removed his half empty clip, loaded a fresh one and flicked his rifle to full auto. a wide smirk was now plastered across his face as his finger jammed and held down the trigger, releasing a tirade of noise and sound which put the message clearly across: his firepower was too incredible for the team to advance.
hastily, the leader of the three barked his orders and the three turned tail and retreated along the route they came. all this time, the teeth shaking vibrations of his rifle caused Enemy's vision to jump up and down like a jack rabbit. a testament, if you would, to the enormous amount of rounds he was expending. only once the last of their wildly flailing boots could no longer be seen did Enemy sit back once more and, setting his rifle to safe, polished off his rations.
all in all, another drill practice nicely carried out. Enemy lovingly patted his rifle, nodded once to the sergeant and put himself at ease.
