its always about being the better person

happy birthday yanni, may you enjoy youthhood. its actually pretty cool once you get used to it, so worry not. all those nagging thoughts at the back of your head about how you should "act your age" are easily ignored if you just remember that we have all the time in the world for that later; lets just piss about now. : D

so anyway i had this funky dream last week in camp during my seven day mounting. it was REALLY vivid, and i couldnt help but note everything down. after staring at it for a while i was like hey whoa... this would make a sweet story. i was stumped for a while on how to do it though, because i felt it needed a reinvention of sorts to give it that spark to make worth posting. then it hit me: nightmares can be kinda freaky, but what happens when you put a cynical, dangerous magician in the middle of one?

yup Adam Occult is back and fulfilling my role in the dream i had... only this time he kicks ass instead of running and escaping in fear. without further ado, here is Adam Occult in another gripping story: The Campus Curse.

The Campus Curse

its NTU and theres something in the air. a sort of oppressing, unclean stinkless odour that retchingly permeates every breath Adam takes. its so thick he almost chokes. and its toll on this once tranquil campus is obvious.

students walk around with their heads down, clustered in little groups and muttering quietly among themselves to remain inconspicuous. the walls are a gloomy shade of grey mirroring the seemingly stagnant overcast sky. trees and bushes, once adding to the life and beauty of the place, have attained a sinister, baleful aura. its no surprise the people have grown tense and weary, jumping at shifting shadows and the slightest noises.

Adam's shoes made no sound as he strides across the windswept lawns towards a whitewashed, official looking building. entering the lobby, he brushes off bits and pieces of leaves clinging to his sweater while making his way to the receptionist. crossing the lobby in five quick steps, he placed his hands on the counter and addressed the prim looking lady.

"hey. im expected."

"good afternoon sir, may i know your name and who is expecting you?"

"its Adam, and-"

before Adam could complete his sentence, the lady stood up. pushing her chair backward, she beckoned Adam to follow as she walked quickly towards a single lift. the doors opened as soon as she pressed the "up" button and Adam accompanied the silent woman into the elevator. after a few seconds, the lift halts its upward progress and the two of them exit on the fifth level. the receptionist escorts him to an unmarked door and, without a word, makes her exit.

Adam wasnt fazed by any of this of course. after the last meeting they had, he wasnt surprised at all the treatment he was getting from the guy. after all, mister high and mighty couldnt be seen talking with a miscreant like him. whereas Adam was familiar with the university staff for creepily standing at the main gates every fortnight staring at a piece of string tied to a bronze key, he was... well. he was in CHARGE of said university staff.

without knocking, Adam pushed the door open and entered.

he found himself in a room which was barely lit by the dimly glowing bulb in the ceiling. an aged desk with a spindly looking chair behind it faced what was perhaps an even more spindly looking chair which was placed directly in front of him. someone already occupied the desk and the chair. ignoring the pleasantries, Adam took the vacant, dangerously tilting chair and whipped out his cigarettes for a puff. the shrouded man in the opposite him harrumphed indignantly at the sight of Adam smoking and spoke.

"must you do that here then."

"whats it matter to you then."

"well, it IS my building in MY university, and you cant smoke in buildings now can you. new rule and all."

Adam closed his eyes and took a particularly long drag, opening them into slits as he exhaled the smoke. his forehead was creased.

"well you havnt been doing such a bangup job of keeping this place together recently have you. ive been hearing talk going around of how the administration could be doing more to protect its students and professors and all, with most of the fingers being pointed at YOUR direction. so stop wasting time gabbing and tell me why the frig youve called me here."

the man shrinked visibly under this tirade, his hands began twitching nervously.

"Well Adam, its like this. see, the deaths here..."

*****

ok you know what. somethings wrong here. not because the story is going awful cause i think so far its pretty good. but because i dont think i should continue due to the deaths being so recent and so... close to home. this essay may seem a bit insensitive in retrospect. i have to take a bit more time to think about this. hmmm.

yeah anyway. life is really damn funny when you really take a third person look at it. as in really just take three huge steps back and look at the whole cosmic picture. i think youd see a cartoon strip. its not all about the irony and slap stick moments, but more how if you just compare everything to how youve actually been living your life, its just... laughable.

in closing, i know this post is substandard. but really, dawn of war 2 is just too fun to spend any more time blogging here. cheers!

It's a thief in the night to come and grab you
It can creep on inside you and consume you
A disease of the mind it can control you
